It is not who we are that keeps us from recognizing and feeling happiness, joy, success (fill in the blank) it is believing in the illusion of who we think we are; or who we think we are supposed to be that keeps us trapped in our minds. Our minds can be conditioned to accept false narratives about ourselves and the world around us. Our egos need to accept the reality of those false narratives and they become attached to dysfunctional thoughts of what we believe we, our family, our religion, our friends, our co-workers, our society, our politicians, our life, (fill in the blank) should be. The disconnect created by false narratives and unrealistic expectations becomes the source of anxiety, depression, pain (fill in the bland) that we ourselves actually create when our negative behaviors/responses to stimuli lead to toxic consequences for ourselves and those around us~Beck
