BroMama Speaks: Fun with Neuroscience

Simple neuroscientific studies utilizing illusions created by 3-D objects, Ames Room work, and visual shading etc, reveal a great deal about the extensive processing that goes on in just one area of the brain. To keep it simple for me to understand, I think of this part of the brain as a visual center network—adding any more detail confuses me and would make it appear that I am pretending to sound smart by using big, fancy, science words that I truly do not understand—the simple is for me, so those who get it please forgive my crude interpretation. Most of us have probably had the experience of looking at the drawing of a cube—think high school geometry or SAT and ACT testing with shapes—oh, the agony. Even though the picture remains unchanged, your perception of the image can flip in an instant and once it does it seems to keep jumping back and forth. It literally drives me wild when I can't get it to hold steady!!!! Is it just me? I really hope not—I digress. What we may think is a simple act of perception, actually involves a complicated, "behind the scenes" analysis of judgment and interpretation that is WICKED COOL--especially if you can't sleep one night and want to read about it while firing up your sensory neurons from looking at all the pictures; or, perhaps you are one of “those” people who actually really love the study of the brain so you read about it for fun……Like, who does that, right???? ****Aha Moment Alert*** Perception is an actively formed opinion of the world rather than a passive reaction to sensory input from it. Each person's perception becomes their reality and that reality can change even if the scene remains constant.....This is true for every other person with a brain where this function is not impaired. Now that you have this “priceless” nugget of information I would ask you to consider this point when, or if, your EGO insists that your way of seeing ,interpreting, judging and perhaps making corrections to the world around you is--not only accurate and permanent--but also worthy of imposing on others….Think, look, and wait, in an instant everything could look completely different to you. Take your time, process what you are seeing, dialogue with others and get some feedback because who knows, their analysis may knock your socks off, or not……You never know, with a little more information, it is possible, maybe….Or, you just might want to look at things from someone else’s perspective just to feed your EGO and prove you are right—It is a Win/Win!!!….We can all have fun with science~ Beck
