A Wink From the Universe

This morning I experienced a moment of synchronicity with a fellow page owner, Coach MD. We had both posted a similar thought on our respective pages without the other knowing. I suggested that we must have been traveling along the same wavelength. He responded, "That is what I call daily Magic."

I replied, “So, do I! I feel a post coming on!”

W.B. Yeats suggests , "The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper." I find it interesting that Yeats chose the word "senses" to describe what needs to become sharper. He did not choose intellect, knowledge, or experience--he chose senses.

Carl Jung coined the term synchronicity to describe what he called the "acausal connecting principle" that links mind and matter. He opined that this underlying connectedness manifests itself through meaningful coincidences that cannot be explained by cause and effect. Such synchronicities occur, he theorized, out of a strong need that arises from the psyche of an individual.

Jung defines three types of synchronistic possibilities; (1) the coinciding of a thought or feeling with an outside event; (2 ) a dream, vision or premonition of something that then happens in the future; and, (3) a dream or vision that coincides with an event occurring at a distance.

In my research, I have not come across a definition of synchronicity that supersedes Carl Jung’s. Interestingly, however, I do find scientific studies suggest the possibility of theoretical research and application for synchronicity in areas of quantum physics, fractal geometry, and chaos theory.

Fundamental aspects of quantum theory are not yet fully understood; however, on a regular basis, laboratories worldwide report results that seem at odds with our everyday intuition; but, that can be explained within the framework of quantum theory. (http://phys.org/news/2013-04-photons-loopholes)

These studies and findings suggest that the notion objects exist in an isolated state, separate from other entities may in fact be a false reality. Quantum Entanglement Research explores the idea that everything -- atoms, cells, molecules, plants, animals, people – are somehow connected along a web of information that allows a fluid exchange of sentient data. Physicists have shown, for example, that if two photons are separated, regardless of difference in distance, a change in one creates a simultaneous change in the other.

Some may refuse to acknowledge the possibility or reality of synchronicity until it can be understood from a scientific perspective. Presently, some of the most gifted physicists of our time are dedicating their efforts to discover the “hows” and the “whys” of interconnectedness.

Physicists are pursuing this research because existing data and new discoveries suggest a relationship that is counterintuitive to what our every day realities would lead us to believe. They need to define the “magic” and determine how it works.Unfortunately, for someone like me, I will probably have a very difficult time understanding the “how” and the “why” of synchronicity as defined by physicists because I do not have a solid enough foundation in physics to comprehend the explanation.

Consider this, I cannot begin to talk intelligently about the electromagnetic spectrum and all that has been and will be developed because of its existence; yet, there are volumes of data and research to explain its existence and reality. To a time traveler from the 1800s the existence of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) would be seen as something magical. Call it science or magic, neithr his inability to comprehend or understand, nor my inability to explain how it works negate its existence.

Highly pragmatic individuals may be likely to shrug off every day synchronistic incidents as coincidence; but, everyone will experience these occurrences whether they acknowledge them or not. I theorize that truths are discovered by individuals in many different ways based on their "life" learning styles. A physicist for example may not find anything peculiar about everyday coincidence; however, her curiosity is piqued by scientific data that challenges her idea of intuitive reality. Perhaps, it may be her scientific studies that lead to a paradigm shift in how she perceives her own every day reality.

I find it incredibly exciting when I come across repeating patterns of ideas while doing research within multiple fields of study. It is interesting for me to consider that truth may be intentionally interconnected so that it will be discovered and find support across the variety of mediums that humans access to identify, process and utilize information. Could that be possible?

Whether we narrowly classify ourselves as thinkers or feelers, we will have opportunities and experiences that will both challenge and support our realities. How we perceive those experiences will determine whether we are learning, growing and moving the needle along the spectrum of possibilities from finite to infinite.

Perception is based on how we experience the boundary between our inner and outer environments. The more we feel a part everything around us, the more engaged and receptive we become to the energy and input we tap into with our senses. This can becomes as much a part of our daily reality as direct, person to person communication

Perhaps, if our senses are sufficiently sharp, synchronistic experiences may provide the most accurate and pure realities because they are not being filtered through a prism of finite thinking. I believe that infinite possibilities exist and the realization of each possibility is limited only by our current finite levels of comprehension and understanding.

Practically speaking, Allan Combs, Ph.D., co-author of Synchronicity: Science, Myth and the Trickster suggests, "Synchronicity can mean moving from moment to moment when making decisions, even small decisions -- especially small decisions! If you expect the unexpected, synchronicity will emerge...Synchronicity seems to happen when you're intensely caught up in something that's very deep -- for instance, falling in makes it pop all over the place. A lot of activities that tap into the deep mystery of life -- things like meditation, contemplative prayer -- also seem to stir it up"

It has been my experience that the way I define and look at decisions that need to be made seems to correlate with whether or not I receive collaborating, unexpected information to utilize in my decision making process. I have discovered that when I define any situation as a problem, I allow negative energy to cloud my ability to be open to a full spectrum of possible answers. However, when I define the same situation as an opportunity, my perspective changes and I find answers in the most unexpected places. That is just how the magic works in my world.

In conclusion, I would like to leave you with this following tale of whimsy to send you on your way. Rebecca, a screenwriter, was researching the life of a mysterious woman, a famous writer's lover who had died tragically at a young age. Driving to Boston to view the writer's archives, Rebecca on a whim stopped off at the sprawling cemetery in the woman's home town, and quickly chanced upon her gravestone. On top of it was sitting a rabbit, its pink nose quivering. At the sight of Rebecca, it started skittering around in circles. In Boston a few hours later, she was reading through the writer's diaries when in the margin of a page, she came upon a few lines of curlicue, schoolgirlish handwriting, which she recognized as being the young woman's. The words? "Thank God for the rabbits and their funny little habits." (Intuition Magazine, 1996).

Perhaps synchronicities are just a wink from the universe. I don’t know; but, never the matter, magic will always be around waiting for our senses to grow sharper; and that is what makes life so wonderful~Becky Bro
